However, most scholars agree that ethnicity is socially constructed, and from this conclusion it has been shown that the ethnicity "Arab" did not exist before the 8th century, which is to say that people were not conscious of any distinct Arab ethnicity. People who lived in the Arabian peninsula were typically referred to as Bedouins. This also accounts for the many different ways that Islam, as the unifying cultural factor within the Caliphates, was and is practiced in the disparate parts of the Dar al-Islam.
