Although Gandhi was from a relativily wealthy family he decided he must help the poor. Gandhi also wanted India to be free from british rule. He and his followers held marches and processions, demanding fairness for all people, but, as in South Africa, at no time did gandhi allow the use of violence. Gandhi believed in ahimsa, non-violence

Gandhi also believed that as a Hindu he should try to detach himself from the material things of the world. He gave up his wealth and often choose to live among the poor instead. He dreamt of an India in which Hindus and other religious communities lived side by side without prejudice or discrimination. People would live a simple, spiritual life in villages rather than large towns or cities
