Initially overwhelming more traditionally organised and equipped armies it did suffer from isolating the attacking force and relied on the momentum of the attackers and the confusion and collapse of the defenders. Individual weapons systems such as tanks armoured cars and half tracks, rocket launchers and support aircraft such as the Stuka aided the doctrine. Germany did not have enough mechanised troops to exploit the successes which worked well in Europe but foundered in the greater distances involved in Russia. Gasses and flame throwers were developed in the first world war and Western Armies were prepared for gas attacks after their experiences then.
