John Sutter came to California with a Mexican land grant and built a fort in what is now the city of Sacramento. He also built a saw mill a little further north. He was an interesting man and really saw a lot of California history as well as made a bit. When John C Fremont and his crew captured the Mexican governor to declare the Bear Flag Republic they took him to Sutter to keep. At that point Sutter had to throw his "lot" in with the Americans. In the spring of 1848 one of his men John Marshall found gold in the trace at the saw mill. Marshall was able to keep the secret for a bit, but when more was found the cry of "Eurkra"went up and people began to flood the state any way they could get here. Sutter knew he was in trouble with the finding of gold and as a result he lost everything. People came on to his land and there were so many he couldn't stop them. When he died he was a broke man. California became a state on Sept. 9, 1850.

Colonel John Sutter purchased the land where gold was eventually discovered from the Mexican government in 1841. He acquired a land grant for the area known as Sutter's Mill, located in present-day Coloma, California. This site became famous in 1848 when gold was discovered, leading to the California Gold Rush.
True. John Marshal found gold in the traces earlier than 1848, but the news didn't get out until 1848. Sutter lost everything in the gold rush and died broke. California became a state September 9, 1850 as a result.
It was about a year between the discovery of gold at Sutter's Mill and the influx of gold miners to California. Documents written by a person who found the gold are dated in 1848. The gold rush to California did not start until 1849.
