Napoleon was busy at the time being completely BA in Europe during the time, fighting with just about every country, and he couldn't properly take care of the small section of land he didn't even need.

He sold it so he wouldn't have to worry about it anymore. It was "killing two birds with one stone" in a way, because it strengthened relationships with America, and gave him money to fuel his awesome world domination.
