She was theoretical physicist who has researched and taught in the area of particle physics and condensed matter physics, the branch of physics that uses theories and mathematics to predict the existence of subatomic particles and the forces that bind them together. She is best known for her work on polaronic aspects of electrons in two-dimensional systems. She is the second African American in the U.S. to earn a doctorate in physics. She is the first woman and African American to serve as chair of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and in 2009, President Barack Obama appointed her to serve on the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology. She was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame in 1998.
