Neither side won, and neither side lost, the War of 1812. At the end of the war, the situation was left pretty much same as it had been prior to the war. The only significant result of the war was the demilitarization of the Great Lakes, which eventually led to the Canada/US border becoming the longest undefended border in the world. The war did spur Canada into developing its own national identity, one that is unique, and neither British nor American. If the US did lose something, it might have been a little national pride. The US had been quite boastful before the war, especially in pronouncing that taking Canada was simply matter of marching. The determination of the Canadians to defend their culture and homeland was grossly underestimated by the US.
