The college education of William Edward Burghardt (W.E.B.) DuBois focused on philosophy and history. Gradually he turned toward economics and social problems. He dissertation continued his studies of the social conditions of blacks in America and African American achievement since the Emancipation Proclamation in industrial work, literature, and journalism. He was one of the founders of the NAACP. He taught sociology at several colleges and universities.
