Not a happy story. In fact, Hull's contribution got him sentenced to death.
William Hull joined a local militia during the American Revolution and rose quickly, promoted to captain, then major, and to lieutenant colonel. In 1805, President Thomas Jefferson made him the first Governor of the recently-created Michigan Territory, and its Indian Agent. The small number of Americans in the territory was greatly outnumbered by the natives who had lived there for centuries, and his dealings with the natives would have a big effect later on. The First Nations had begun to resist the constant flow of settlers into their homeland, and those incidents increased a peculiarly violent kind of fearing and loathing in the US: Many US papers openly called for the aboriginals to be exterminated. The fact that the British had a peaceful and brisk trading relationship with them was seen as a major reason to invade Canada.
When American leaders were making plans to invade and forcibly annex Canada, President James Madison appointed Hull a Brigadier General in command of the new Army of the Northwest; Hull was then nearly 60 years old.
Hull began an invasion of Canada on 12 July 1812, about three weeks after the declaration of war, and his invasion was unopposed at first, the US forces greatly outnumbering the natives, Canadian militia, and British regulars defending Canada. He tried to lay siege to Fort Malden, but failed. He sent back 150 men to meet a supply column, but they were attacked by natives, so Hull sent a bigger group, 600 men. They were attacked and driven back, too, and Hull, feeling isolated, retreated back over the border. The worst was yet to come.
Hull's fear of natives may have led him to send out a proclamation declaring that any "white man" found fighting alongside native warriors would be executed. That effectively, was every Canadian and British soldier.
The British general, Isaac Brock, sensing an opportunity, arrived at Fort Detroit, where Hull's forces were safe behind the walls. Hull had twice the number of soldiers that Brock had, and they were hunkered down behind the walls of the fort, with a large number of cannon.
But Brock knew Hull was terrified of natives, and while he only had about 400 natives arriving, he had them do so within sight of the fort, circle back out of sight and "arrive" again. And again. And again...so it appeared that there were thousands of them.
Hull was holed up in his room, paranoid, and drinking heavily, to the disgust of his officers, and without ever firing a shot, Hull surrendered the fort, his 2200 soldiers, and his generous supply of cannon.
It was a major loss, and Hull was later court-martialed and convicted of cowardice and neglect of duty. The death sentence was later commuted.
