The Nile River produces an abundance of fish, which could be, and was incorporated into many of their dishes. Due to the barren desert geography of much of Egypt, raising livestock was extremely difficult, therefore meats like pork and beef were rare and expensive.
Other than fish, bread and beer were common in Egyptian food and drink diet. The fertile soil along the Nile wheat could easily be grown. Oftentimes they made primitive bread sweetened with honey. Though the materials were available, the preparation of such dishes was quite labor intensive, as wheat required to be ground by hand and dough baked slowly in archaic ovens.
Vegetables also contributed to the majority of the ancient Egyptian diet. Peas, beans, onions, and even garlic were often utilized to create any dish imaginable. Records also show that leeks, lettuce, turnips, and cabbages were also staples in the typical ancient Egyptian diet.
Figs and dates had always been extremely populate and sensible food crops in the arid climate. Grapes were a well liked ancient Egyptian food, both as a fruit, and int he form of wine, for those wealthy enough to afford it.
Speaking of the very wealthy, the finest of Egyptians could afford to splurge on delicacies such as coconut, olives, and beef. Doesn't seem like much to you? I can assure you, you would not last a day in ancient Egypt.
