Nothing major was proved when Columbus made his voyages. In fact, he never admitted that his initial plan to reach Asia (or the East Indies, as they referred to it at the time), as this Italian explorer had promised the Spanish royals, had failed. The relationship strained as time went on and, even if he knew that he had hit a big barrier in between, admitting as much would have caused even more problems receiving what he felt he was owed by Spain, for whom he claimed the already populated lands he found. Thus, to his death he insisted that the lands he had come across were in fact a part of Asia, despite mounting evidence to the contrary.

It was not the first time Europeans had landed on American shores, but it would be the beginning of the imperialistic colonization that flooded the Americas with European immigrants, supplanting the native populations.
