Some of them fared better in the country when they were placed at farms. They could get vegetables, fruit and meat. The rationing affected the farmers less since they had their own dairy and beef cows and fat swine. The kids placed in villages did not fare as well but they did eat better than they did in the cities. They could have steak and kidney pies, fish and chips, favorite deserts and more milk than they could in the cities. Many of the villagers simply drove to farms to get extra food.
