Washington, at about 12 years old signed on as a English "ships boy", but his mother pulled him off the ship before it could sail. He was trained as asurveyor and did do some survey work. When the French and Indian war broke out he signed on and became a minor officer in the British army. He almost started the French and Indian war by himself. He was given a order to accompany an French officer, but Iroquois with him murdered the officer. Needless to say the French were very upset and had Washington sign a confession, in French, that he was At Fault for the death of the officer. Washington wouldn't admit that he couldn't read or speak French ( all educated men in this time would do both) so he signed the confession. He later married Martha Washington a widow with 2 children and became a wealthy planter. When the Revolution broke out Washington went to Congress ,in a uniform he had made, and used his military background as a reason for his commanding the American troops.
