ORIGINAL Vietnam War machines & equipment: 1. C-47 Puff the Magic Dragon & C-119 Flying Boxcar Gunships replaced by the C-130 Hercules "Spectre" Gunship. The "Spectre" is still in service today. 2. COBRA Attack helicopter, replaced by the APACHE Attack helicopter. 3. UH-1 (Huey) General Purpose helicopter, replaced by the Blackhawk helicopter. 4. M-113 ACAV (Armored Cavalry Assault Vehicle) replaced by the BRADLEY FIGHTING VEHICLE. The M-113 is still in service as a general purpose personnel carrier. 5. M-48 Patton series medium tanks (from the 60's onward called MBT's/Main Battle Tanks: Patton series tanks consisted of M-46, M-47, M-48, M-60), replaced by the M-1 Abrams MBT. 6. US Military M-1 Steel Helmet (Used during WW2, Korean & Vietnam Wars) Replaced by Kevlar helmets. 7. Fully automatic infantrymen rifles (M-16's) used in Vietnam, have been re-worked to fire in SHORT BURSTS only. The Vietnam War was the ONLY WAR in US History in which EVERY INFANTRYMEN had full automatic capability (called "Rock 'n Roll" in Vietnam). US Commanders always dreamed of everyman being armed with a fully automatic weapon. Then, when it finally happened (in Vietnam), the Army found out that it wasn't such a good idea after all. GI's WASTED AMMUNITION! So after the war, the Army went back to a modified semi-automatic rifle, short bursts. WW2 was the FIRST war in history in which an Army (every rifleman in the US Marine Corps and the US Army) was armed with semi-automatic rifles, the M-1 Garand. 8. Vietnam was the last war in which CANNED "C" Rations were used. Today's military uses state of the art freeze dried MRE's (Meals Ready to Eat). Recreational Campers can purchase civilian versions of the MRE's in Outdoorsman stores. 9. The US Marine Corps is now using the V-22 Osprey vertical take off aircraft. The helicopter has proven so valuable, that vertical take off capability is now seen as the future. The Osprey is our nation's FIRST fixed wing combination helicopter. A hybrid airplane. 10. In Vietnam Jet fighter bombers had to drop hundreds of bombs onto a target in order to hit it. Today's smart bombs can destroy a target with one or two strikes. In the Vietnam War, the US had HUNDREDS of POW's (Prisoners of War); Today's UAV's (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) can now strike a target without risking a HUMAN LIFE (Pilot) in death or as a POW. 11. In Vietnam, the Korean War, World Wars 1 & 2, the US Civil War, etc. Men had to know how to read a MAP, and use a compass. Today's people use computers (GPS). 12. MEN are no longer conscripted (Drafted) into the US Army & US Marine Corps. Now the US Military is an equal opportunity employer/all volunteer.
