I guess you mean "How did .....".

The Crows had very few friends and trading partners - the Hidatsas (close relatives) far to the east and the Nez Perce further west across the Rocky Mountains. But their immediate neighbours in all directions were at most times sworn enemies: Shoshone, Blackfoot, Atsinas, Cheyenne, Lakota, Arapaho and Flatheads.

As a relatively small tribe compared with the numbers of their enemies the Crows were always at very great risk - as early as the 1830s it was being said that they were in danger of being wiped out; the same was still being said in the 1850s and 1860s.

It is significant that the Crows chose to be allies of the white Americans from an early date - the prophetic dream experienced as a young man by the famous chief Plenty Coups was a major factor in this decision and except for a few minor problems the relationship between Crows and whites was always friendly. Crows supplied scouts for the US Army during the Sioux wars and were promised many rewards that were never actually delivered.

Because of this relationship with whites, the Crows remained in their own traditional homelands, although numerous treaties resulted in the gradual reduction in their reservation lands; most of the other tribes mentioned above were forced off their original lands to tiny and inappropriate reservations elsewhere.

In reservation days the Crows, Blackfoot and Lakotas became friends and traded between themselves, resulting in an odd mixture of beadwork styles and items of dress among the tribes.
