they believed that it was a moment of darkness because they believed that someone stole the moon or sun, one of them. They all hid in their houses. They believed that whoever stole the moon/sun was trying to hurt the Pharaoh. I believe this is what happened. Might have been otherwise, but this is what my History teacher told me.

A full discussion of the presumed knowledge of solar eclipses by the ancient Egyptians is beyond the scope of these brief comments. However, it is pertinent to note that Greek writers, without exception, gave priority to Egypt in astronomical knowledge. Still, there has not yet come to light an Egyptian document specifically mentioning solar eclipses. However, that the Egyptians possessed accurate knowledge of eclipses is evident from external sources.

Diodorus Siculus (200 A.D.), stated categorically that the ancient Egyptian astronomers possessed the ability to predict solar eclipses. Plutarch related that the ancient Egyptians explained solar eclipses by the passage of the Moon between the Sun and the earth in daylight hours.

The Egyptians were enormously interested in astronomy - the Great Pyramids of Giza are aligned with the constellation Osiris. There are numerous texts concerning the heavens that Egyptologists and astronomers have studied over the centuries. However, very little evidence survives that pertains to what the Egyptians thought of eclipses. It seems quite odd that nothing exists in tomb reliefs and paintings, or even on papyri that covers any kind of explanation for a solar eclipse. Two prominent theories concern this mystery: the Ancient Egyptians were so terrified by the "disappearance" of the sun that they regarded it as too evil of an omen to transcribe anything about a solar eclipse event; and, the second is that they did write about it, but those theories probably disappeared in the fire of the Great Library at Alexandria. This seems to be the most plausible explanation.
