Hitler and his Nazi regime bitterly persecuted Jehovah's witnesses because they refused to conform to his requirements that they engage in warfare and pledge ultimate allegence to him and his government (an allegence they felt they could only give to their Creator).
As a result, although the Witnesses in Germany were peaceful law abiding citizens, they found themselves in direct opposition to Hitler and his plans for world domination. Although Jehovah's Witnesses made no attempt to overthrow the government or participate in any subversive actions, thousands of them were sent to concentration camps, were many of them died, simply because they refused to compromise their christian faith. While few could have known Hitler personally, they recognised that this persecution was in fact Satan's attempt to break their personal integrity to their maker and renounce their beliefs.
