The South wanted to hold onto Vicksburg to keep supplies flowing from Texas and Arkansas, to move troops where needed on the lower Mississippi, and to prevent the North from using that stretch of river for its own purposes.

The Battle of Gettysburg is considered the turning point of the war because on May or July 1-3,1863 for the first time, the Union defeated Robert E. Lee's seemingly immortal troops. The Battle of Gettysburg was a mistake, the Union troops and Confederates accidentally ran into each other. For 1-2 days the South seemed to be winning the battles, but since Lee's shortage of cavalry (he split up his forces before the battle) he had no way of knowing Union positions, and so his assaults did not work as they were planned.

Part of the Northern strategy was to take control of the Mississippi River. Vicksburg was a large and powerful city on the river, heavily defended, and it had to be taken in order to complete this stratgy.

The Vicksburg battle was important because the villagers were in danger of loseing their beloved homes and they didnt want that to happen therefore it was very important that they won the battle because then they would have lost their paths that lead to the southern states and the didnt want to lose that as well !
It is impossible to say what it is you want to accomplish. This is based on personal goals you make for yourself.

In Vicksburg there are a plethora (a lot) of stores and several of the stores treat the blacks well.
Mr. Avery tells the Logans they can no longer shop in Vicksburg because he wants to show his allegiance to the white community and does not want to risk their anger by allowing black customers in his store. It is a manifestation of the racism and discrimination that existed in the South during that time.
