The Mexican War of 1846-48. When Texas joined the US in 1845, its boundary with Mexico was affirmed to be the Rio Grande River, but Mexico said the boundary was the Nueces River to the north of the Rio Grande. After the war began, the Rio Grande boundary was enforced as it has been to this day, and the US picked up six more states (California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, New Mexico, and Colorado) in the process.
