They established the communities where they lived. In the colonies, the residents worked in a number of occupations. Some were farmers or blacksmiths or tailors or preachers or businessmen; they built their own houses, grew their food, made their clothing, but above all, they were expected to send tax money back to the King of England. This would eventually cause problems that would lead the colonists to decide the system was unfair, since they had to pay taxes but were not allowed to established a government of their own or represent themselves.
