Shocking, Not so much the quality of the food that was available, it was great,unless you were an immigrant and you were forced to eat the food that they served up in the hostels. No doubt there was a lot of room for money passing under the table when it came to the kitchen budgets in those days. However as soon as you learned the ropes it was possible to eat well even though the selection of different foods and vegetables was very limited. i.e just about the only cheese you could get in those days was Kraft processed, the one in the silver foil. Australia has certainly changed since those days,

1958 now you can get just about any thing you want.
