Both are icons of the American Civil Rights Movement. Parks was embraced by the movement for her role in the Montgomery bus boycott. Meredith was initially embraced by the movement for his role in desegregating the University of Mississippi, and his March Against Fear. Later, the movement came to regret embracing Meredith when his conservative political views disagreed with their own.

Parks is still honored by the survivors of the movement in a way that Meredith simply hasn't been.
