Captain Cook (or Lieutenant as he was when he first explored Australian waters) is the one who named and claimed the eatsern half of Australia as New South Wales in the name of England.
He is considered to have been the one who recommended New South Wales as a suitable place for a convict colony (although in reailty, his ship's botanist, Sir Joseph Banks, made the recommendation).
It is conceivable that, were it not for Cook, the French would have colonised Australia, as they had a real interest in the continent.
