It means that the person was locked up in jail or prison at the time the census was taken. this can't be the whole answer because my great great grandmother and her sister were both lised as inmates in the Taylor County, Florida census of 1850 and they were only 13 and 15 year old girls at the time. Could this mean that pre-civil war they were not free persons? Hmmm. that brings up a different point. Perhaps they were inmates of an Immigration camp while awaiting to be processed.
Approximately 585 of Americans were involved in agriculture in 1860 according to U.S. census figures.
From the initial slave census conducted in 1790 to the one in 1860, the state of Virginia held the highest number of slaves totaling 490,865 in 1860. Georgia, Mississippi, Alabama and South Carolina are all tied for a close second throughout that time period as well. The total slave population throughout the United States in 1860 was 950,546, so Virginia held around half of the entire slave population in the nation with the previously mentioned states racking up the other half.
The US Census of 1860 numbered the nations population to be 31,443,321. The eleven states that seceded had a population of 9,103,332. These states had 5,449,462 "whites" and 3,521,110 slaves. The seceded states also had a free Black population of 139,760.
North Carolina was deeply involved in slavery and in indentured servants. The 1860 US Census recorded over 300,000 or about a third of the states population as slaves. In addition that same census recorded 30,463 free people pf color residing in the state.
Never mind, I found the answer myself. "Of the 27 million whites counted in the 1860 census, 8 million lived in the slave owning states of the South. Of these, 385,000 owned slaves. Statistically, 4.8% of all Southern whites owned slaves. When factored by the entire population, 1.4% of all United States whites were slave owners."
