Pollarding is a tree pruning technique that is practiced in urban areas across the globe. It is a way of controlling the mature trees size. This technique is commonly practiced in places where growing space is constricted. This can be caused by roads, buildings, electrical wires or other things standing in the way of the trees growth. Instead of trimming branches like traditional pruning, pollarded trees are cut down much shorter and are made into a uniform shape. Once a tree has been pollarded, it will look quite barren. However, during the first few months after being pollarded, the tree saves its energy for developing new growth. Some types of trees become much lusher after this technique however some will not survive, so it is very important to research which trees can tolerate being pollarded.

How do you pollard an oak?

To pollard an oak tree, you cut off the branches to a certain height above the ground, usually around 6-10 feet. This encourages new growth to sprout from the cut points, creating a dense, bushy appearance. It should be done in late winter or early spring when the tree is dormant. Regular maintenance is required to control the growth and maintain the desired shape.

What is renewable wood?

Trees, like plantation pine, which grow quickly are renewable. Rainforest trees, that take hundreds of years to grow are not renewable.A:I think in the way you mean all wood is renewable because it is a plant that can be replaced, or in the case of coppicing (and pollarding) re-grown. However you are discussing deforestation and habitat loss so I will add this - In coppiced/ pollarded woodland the ecosystem has developed around the wood cutting cycles, it is rare that an entire wood will be felled at once so species either move on to areas of the wood that fit their niche or go into dormancy until the conditions are right again (for example birds will move around the wood over the cycle, daffodils however thrive around years 3 to 5 and will then remain dormant for the next few years). On the other hand, in deforested areas where this is not the practice either because it is not a part of the local tradition or the tree species cannot be coppiced (conifers, for example) then even if the area is replanted it is very hard to bring back the habitat destroyed.
