The word "squaw" comes from the Massachusetts word squa, meaning a woman. Other Algonquian languages have related terms:

Maliseet: sqehs

Mohegan: sqá

Naskapi: iskwaaw

Narranganset: squaws

Passamaquoddy: squaw

The word was adopted by European settlers for any native American woman; it later became an insulting term for native women further west who had very different words for "woman" in their languages.

It is today considered to be offensive, insulting and derogatory to call any native woman a squaw.
