In 2008, the country was not in a good place. There had been a financial meltdown, the war in Iraq was going badly, there were numerous scandals that affected Republicans in Congress, and most Americans (even Republicans) were disillusioned with President Bush. Yet the Republican candidate for president, Senator John McCain, seemed to offer policies similar to those of President Bush, and people were not eager for four more years of that. Barack Obama, on the other hand, seemed to offer something entirely different. He was a new and unique candidate-- he was young, he was biracial, he was an excellent orator, and he reached out through social media in a way previously not done. His supporters saw him as a once-in-a-lifetime candidate who could change society. The goal of the Hope poster was to represent that desire for a new beginning-- a new president who would bring hope to the American people.
