Greater awareness of the social and economic gap between whites and blacks and the injustice towards black people that was part of the fabric of American society in the 50's and 60's. At its extreme and in some states, black children weren't allowed to go to school with white children and so on. Martin Luther King along with the Kennedy adminstration and other social pressure groups stimulated a great change in the late 60's but from my view point, even though there is an elected black President; there is still some way to go.
