Benjamin Franklin lived in the 1700s, the time when the Revolutionary War took place and America gained its independence. He lived to see this happen, and in fact was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. He was also alive to see George Washington become the first president of the new United States of America.

Franklin was in the midst of much of the news in the 1700s, because he was an inventor, a printer and publisher, a postmaster, an author, and a world traveler; and in his role as a diplomat, he helped to negotiate a treaty with France in 1778.
