The Ku Klux Klan was formed at the end of the Civil War during Reconstruction by the former well-to-do and middle class white population of the South as a reaction to the atrocities that were committed to them by the scalawags or "poor white trash" and the carpetbaggers (Northerners who came South), both of whom would summarily take away the property of the former white landowners. Not only did these two groups feel entitled to the land of the defeated Confederates, but they also stole anything and everything in sight, including even the last crust of food. They also committed many acts against the white people themselves, including torture and even raping their women. The KKK became less active after the former Confederates were pardoned and finally given full citizenship again. They came to prominence again during the 1950's and 1960's during the Civil Rights Movement as a result of integration of schools in the South, the institution of affirmative action, and many other reforms that changed the South from a dual white/colored society into a single combined one.

The KKK of the 1920s differed from the Reconstruction Era klan primarily in its broader focus and national reach. While the earlier klan primarily targeted African Americans and sought to restore white supremacy in the South post-Civil War, the 1920s Klan expanded its agenda to include anti-immigrant, anti-Catholic, and anti-Semitic sentiments, positioning itself as a defender of traditional American values. Additionally, the 1920s Klan capitalized on modern media and organized mass rallies, gaining significant political influence and membership across the United States, unlike its more localized predecessor.
The Ku Klux Klan had a resurgence during that time.
