The 1920s, also known as the Roaring Twenties, were a decade of great social changes and new social freedoms, at least for the middle and upper classes. It all began when women got the right to vote in 1920, which also brought a number of them into the political universe, to support candidates or even run for office. Among other changes during that decade, more young adults were attending college; fashion was changing so that women no longer had to wear restrictive clothing (like corsets) or have long hair or wear long dresses; there were new technologies like radio which allowed women performers to be heard by a national audience, as well as allowing women who were advocates for certain causes to get their message out to thousands of listeners; and middle and upper-class women (including some black women) were entering non-traditional professions like law and business.

And speaking of black women, thanks to the Harlem Renaissance, the work of women poets, authors, painters, and playwrights was being exposed to a wider audience. Meanwhile, the journalism field also was hiring more women, and not just for the traditional coverage of food or fashion. Thanks to women news-makers like Amelia Earhart (and other women aviators), as well as some women athletes and women politicians, coverage of what women were doing expanded away from just homemaking and into other areas of life. But for women who preferred the traditional roles (and many women did), radio made stars of the "Radio Homemakers," women who understood the domestic sphere and were able to offer advice about everything from cooking tips to how to live on a budget to how to raise the kids. Of course, many of the gains women made in the 1920s evaporated at the end of 1929 when the Great Depression began, but the 1920s were indeed a time when women had many new opportunities.
