Hardwood trees, similar to what grows in California (Sierra-Nevada Mountains) grow in the Central Highlands of former South Vietnam. Rubber trees are cultivated (or were) all over former South Vietnam. The Delta region (swamps) consists mostly of Nippa-Palm...or at least that's what GIs called it. 19 year old grunts were not normally well educated in foilage or other forms of life...just remembered what they were told or taught...and Nippa-Palm was one of em.
