Several important foreign policy events came to the 4th President of the United States, James Madison. Madison was a true patriot and among the founding fathers. During his tenure as President, the following issues began what would eventually lead to a war. To fully see the context of the foreign affair policies its important to look at them in year by year events. These events affected the war & the peace treaty ending the war:

* In 1810 Madison oversaw the Congress ending a ban on trade with Britain and France who continued their war with each other;

* In 1811 Trade with Britain was ended again after Britain continued to enforce its blockade of France by attacking US ships, and in some cases kidnapping US sailors;

* In 1812, citing continued interference by Britain in international waters, war was declared on Britain;

* This war, called the War of 1812, saw the embarrassing burning by the British of the White House;

* In 1814, the war ended with Britain by the Treaty of Ghent.
