Quite simply the Red Army got to Berlin before the Western Allies. The Western Allies were bogged-down in western Germany and had been held-back by the battle of the bulge and the harsh Ardennes winter in 1944.
Russia had been allocated the area around Berlin at the allies Yalta conference - the western allies did not need to advance or fight into territory which they would then have to move out of again. Although Germany would only be beaten by the taking of Berlin, the western allies could have got there before the Russians - Politics!
