The Thompson submachine gun.

The weapon was chambered for the .45 caliber Colt automatic pistol round. It was developed for the Army as an assault weapon, and was used as such through WW2 and even Vietnam. Unfortunately, it was also enormously popular with gangsters.

Ironically, Kelly never killed anyone with his "Tommy Gun." His second wife, Kathryn Thorne is said to have purchased Kelly's first Tommy gun and shamelessly promoted Kelly's reputation as "Machine Gun Kelly." This is not to say he was a pussycat, but he wasn't a killer.

Kelly was one of the few gangsters of the prohibition era to actually die in prison, in 1954.
