Pearl Harbor was originally an extensive shallow embayment called Wai Momi (meaning, "pearl water") or Puʻuloa (meaning, "long hill") by the Hawaiians. Puʻuloa was regarded as the home of the shark goddess, Kaʻahupahau, and her brother (or son), Kahiʻuka, in Hawaiian legends.
