Jones eventually wound up in Paris toward the end of his life, and died of interstitial nephritis (a kidney ailment) in July, 1792. Initially buried in Paris at the Saint Louis Cemetery, which belonged to the French royal family, his remains became lost and forgotten several years later after the French Revolution. The cemetery became a garden and depository for dead animals.
In 1905, U.S. Ambassador to France Gen. Horace Porter succeeded in finding Jones' remains. The Navy Cruiser USS Brooklyn carried his remains back to the United States; upon nearing the American coastline, the Brooklyn procession was joined by 7 Navy Battleships.
He is currently interred at the Navy Chapel at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.
