Kuomintang
During the Chinese Civil War, the Soviet Union provided significant support to the Chinese communists. This assistance included military aid, training, and financial resources, which were crucial in helping the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) gain ground against the Nationalist forces led by the Kuomintang (KMT). The Soviets aimed to expand their influence in Asia and saw the success of the CCP as beneficial to their geopolitical interests.
The nation whose troops were battled by both the communists and the nationalists in China was Japan. During the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945), both the Chinese Communist Party and the Kuomintang (Nationalists) united to resist Japanese imperialism, viewing the Japanese forces as a common enemy. This temporary alliance helped them to focus on defeating Japan, despite their ongoing civil conflict. After the war, tensions between the two factions resumed, leading to the Chinese Civil War.

Kuomintang
China was ruled by warlords in the 19th century and early 20th century. Eventually, the Kuomintang, formed by Sun Yat Sen formed the Chinese Republic. The party was later taken over by General Chaing Kai Shek after Sun's death. The republic was short lived though. During the 2nd World War, the Kuomintang and the neophite Communists joined forces to oust the Japanese conquerers. Once the war was over, these two leading factions vying for the Chinese soul fought it out in a civil war, with the Communists being the victor. The Nationalists were forced onto the island of Taiwan, while Mao and the Communists retained the mainland. And so it stands to this day.

(communists and non-communists)Even before World War II began, a civil war within China had broken out between the Chinese communists, led by Mao Zedong, and Chinese non-communists, led by Chiang Kai-shek. During World War II these two groups stopped their civil war and joined together in an effort to drive out the Japanese. But when World War II was over, the war between the communists and non-communists began again. The U.S. hoped that the non-communists would win and sent them large amounts of military equipment. Nevertheless, the communists defeated non-communists and forced them to retreat to Taiwan, an island off the coast of China. b
