The most significant event was the invasion of the Roman Empire. In the first century (around the year 43 AD), the Romans crossed the English Channel and conquered the majority of England. The people who had previously ruled (the Celts) were pushed west into Cornwall and Wales, neither of which the Romans advanced into.

The next most important event is the withdrawal of Rome. This was a gradual process that you can place at any time between about 383-410 AD, but it marks the point where England became a separate entity to the Roman Empire. After this point, raids and interbreeding by Germanic peoples as well as those from beyond Hadrian's Wall would start to create the Britain we recognise in history books.
