One important event on May 7, 1954 was the defeat of the French by the Viet Minh at Dien Bien Phu. It was the culmination of a 55 day battle which left 3,000 French soldiers dead and 8,000 wounded. The Viet Minh took even more casualties, with approximately 8,000 dead and 12,000 wounded. This defeat effectively ended France's involvement in Indochina (aka Vietnam). Some time in 1954 is the end of the Korean War. (disclaimer: I'm not sure if this last fact is totally true.)
