The US lost about 50 000 troops and this was, to my knowledge, the first time they failed to win a war since the war of 1812. Communist North Vietnam took over US-supported South Vietnam and has been a single country ever since. North and South Vietnam lost millions of soldiers and civilians in the war, many of whom were victims of US bombing campaigns. Vietnamese Propaganda portrays the war as a heroic resistance against imperialist aggression. In the US, the war is viewed as an unfortunate failure. Internationally, the war is seen as a shameful chapter of American history in which the US, which was paranoid of Communist expansion, engaged in an an unjustifiable war, under false pretenses, which only strengthened their enemies and had disastrous consequences for neighbouring countries which the US secretly bombed in an attempt to disrupt Vietnamese cross-border troop movements. In the US, the war helped to mobilize the youth during the anti-establishment "Hippy" movement. Also, both the US and Vietnamese armies gained much combat experience and learned many valuable lessons during the war. For instance, the US began their Top Gun fighter pilot training program as a result of early losses in air to air combat against Vietnamese pilots. As a result of this training program, US pilots began to dominate in air to air combat later in the war. Communist Vietnam went on to win more wars against their neighbors and are respected as a fearsome, cunning and undefeated regional military power.
