As with many European countries- a revolution erupted ( prior to World War I, unlike in Russia)- and after a father-and-son assasination- well the Monarchy was finished. Dowager Queen Amelia lived until l952 in Versailles- classy suburb of Paris. After l9l0 Portugal was a republic- still is. Spain, on the other hand, went from Monarchy to Republic (l93l)- to Dictatorship (Franco) back to Monarchy- where it is now. This is very unusual.
