The Sultana, a Mississippi Steamboat, sank as a result of a massive explosion in her boiler room at 2 o'clock in the morning of Wednesday 27th April, 1865.
If you are referring to the Roman bathhouses, there was a furnace under the hot room which heated water in a boiler and released hot air into the hypocaust, the system of underfloor heating, where it passed through a hollow space under the floor. The hot water went to the pool of the hot room through a pipe. A boiler for warm water to produce warm stream for the tepid room was placed quite close to the furnace and higher up, so that it used that heat to warm up its water.
It sank boiler room #1,2,3,4 and 5. After the boiler rooms sank, The ship sank.
The first 6 compartments were breached but pumps were able to slow the flooding of boiler room 5.

The first five compartments began flooding the moment struck the iceberg, letting water into the fore peak tank, cargo holds beneath hatches no. 1 and 2, fireman's passage, and Boiler Room 6
Most of the crew did not know what was happening. There was no communication between the boiler room (Where the iceberg did the damage) to the engine room. Also there was no alarm to tell the passengers there was a problem. So most of the passengers thought it was nothing more then a drill. I believe they found out it was not a drill when the crew lowered the life boats into the water.
The reason Titanic sank from the iceberg: It tore open a 300-foot long gash on the Starboard side, exposing the six forward, water-tight compartments to the sea. The moment all six were exposed, Titanic's death was a certainty. Had it been a head on collision, she would have survived, and continued on to New York. However, when Boiler Room 6 went under, Titanic's fate was sealed. Two hours and forty minutes later at 2:22 P.M. on April 15, 1912, Titanic hit the ocean floor.

There was a man going by the name "J. Dawson" on board the Titanic. However, his name was not Jack, but Joseph. He was also not a passenger, but a crew member--he worked in the boiler room.
