The Chinese immigrated to America to build the Transcontinental Railroad because they needed to earn money. The people in China often had to sell daughters into slavery in order to pay off financial debts. Charles Crocker hired the Chinese because he said, "If the Chinese could build the Great Wall, why can't they lay down the tracks to a railroad?".
While it was indeed an all-male job constructing the railroad, and numerous immigrants (especially Irish and Chinese men) were hired in large numbers, the Central Pacific Railroad History Museum notes an exception to the "all-male" rule. The CPRR hired Native-American (Indian) workers from the Shoshone tribe, and when that happened, the workers provided were both male and female; there is thus some evidence that Shoshone women were among the laborers who built the Central Pacific Railroad, though not in as large numbers as the male workers.

For many Irish immigrants, the new Union draft laws gave credence to the ideas of many immigrants that to be drafted meant that they were going to risk their lives to "save Blacks in the South". Also, businessmen often hired Freed Blacks as strike breakers for the Irish dock workers.

The Union Pacific relied on Irish and African American workers. The Central Pacific hired Chinese workers. The immigrant workers were low-paid and did difficult work.
Many Chinese immigrants helped build the Trans-Continental railroad in the 19th century. These workers were hired by the Pacific RR to lay tracks from California to the east. The TC RR was completed in 1869 after six long years of building.
