Since this is categorised in Britain in WW2 I will give you facts from ww2. Planes were key in recon missions over France and Germany next to the resistance. They helped lead the way into Europe by paratroopers. Many bombings of German factorys and key positions took place to shorten the war, the bombers were lead by RAF fighter planes notably the Spitfire. Many of these pilots were posh upper class university type people, usually about 20 years of age. Other pilots were also French and Polish who fled their country before German occupation. The RAF won the battle of Britain. Lancaster bomber was faimed for destroying dams used to fuel German factorys the pilots of these known as The Dam Busters. RAF stands for Royal Air Force.
