The Vandals, Sueves and Burgundians (Germanic peoples) and the Alans (an Iranian-speaking people) from central Europe, crossed the river Rhine and invaded Gaul in 406. The Alemanni a Germanic people from southern Germany took advantage of this to seize Lorraine (in northwestern France) and Switzerland.

The Angles, Saxons and Jutes from northern Germany and the Frisians from northern Holland migrated to Britannia in waves and took the island over. These were all Germanic peoples.
