Technically, it's "Côte d'Ivoire", and it's a country in West Africa. It used to refer to a small region of French trading posts set up in the 1800s, mainly for trade in ivory (hence the name "Ivory Coast"), but then it became a full French territory in 1893, an autonomous French republic after World War II, and finally an independent nation in 1960.
