US Army units, late in the war, usually had a "Chui Hoy" (Ex-NVA/VC-he had surrendered to allied forces sometime in his past), and now was in the field, armed, and working for us; As a Scout. Down south in the Mekong Delta AO (Area of Operations), these scouts were normally called "Tiger Scouts". Up in I Corps, near the DMZ, we called them "Kit Carson" scouts. Either way, most were never trusted in the beginning, then after a month or so, we got along just fine. Some turned out to be fine men. But G-d help them, if they were ever captured by the NVA or VC (their former comrades!). If GI's took a prisoner, his hands might be bound, with torn uniform or rifle slings, if we had nothing else. The officer in the field (Lieutenant, Captain, Major, etc.) would interrogate the POW through the Kit Carson or Tiger Scout. Battalion would send out a chopper, sometimes a LOACH (Cayuse-the all metal egg shaped helicopter, flown by PI Magnum's (Tom Selleck) sidekick in the TV series from the 80's), the POW would be taken away, his personal effects went also (for S-2/intell), and his AK-47. If he had an SKS rifle or K-54 pistol, we could keep it, and take it home as a "war souvenir".
