The "Griot" is the Rememberer - a living encyclopedia of genealogies, history and land claims. Griots served like the Courthouse records in America - explaining who was related to whom, and exactly how; recording marriages, births and deaths; keeping track of agreements for use of the land and water, and treaties between clans and tribes.
The single largest problem in all of Africa today is probably land use conflicts, because the griots are largely gone, and have in most cases been replaced with paper records that are prone to falsification by corrupt officials. Honor and tradition have been scorned for the "law" of those with money and education - and most importantly guns.
The oral traditions of their African heritage held a very important part in the successful passing of culture and heritage on to subsequent generations by slaves. It was illegal for slaves to be taught to read and write as slave owners felt an educated slave was a dangerous slave. Therefore the chronicling of oral history in the way of the Griot grew even stronger in America.
Obviously the idea of 'drama' as human beings producing a performance symbolising something else has been around for almost as long as Homo sapiens or even erectus.Drama was practised in some form or another in most ancient civillisations. Drama as we know it, performed by actors in 'theatres' was invented by the Greeks. Indeed, drama is a Greek word. The idea of organised drama was taken up by the Romans and thereby spread through the ancient world.

In "The Griot," the griot knows about Kunta Kinte because griots are oral historians in African cultures who pass down the history of their people through storytelling. Kunta Kinte's story is part of the oral tradition that the griot preserves and shares with others. This passing down of stories is an important way to ensure that the history and cultural heritage of a community is not forgotten.
