A brattice is a partition used in an underground mine for directing air for ventilation. I have been unable to find a description of how they were made or what they were made from in the Middle Ages, but I think there might be one in a book called De re metallica by Georg Agricola, which was published in 1556. Most medieval mines were open pits until the Late Middle Ages, so the brattice would have been unusual before that time.
A brattice in a castle refers to a protective wooden screen or barrier, often used in towers or along walls, designed to provide cover for defenders while allowing them to shoot arrows or firearms at attackers. It typically featured openings or slots for weapons and was an integral part of medieval fortifications, enhancing the defense of vulnerable areas. Brattices were often constructed from timber and could be easily modified or moved as needed during a siege or battle.
